About the surveyor

Background

Tom began his career in the marine industry back in 2008 by joining the Merchant Navy as an officer cadet at the age of 18. After a few years of travelling the world, he moved into the coastal shipping industry, where he remained, progressing to the rank of 1st officer. Over the past few years, marine safety has become a large part of Toms job which, amongst other things, has included introducing new safety initiatives, accident investigation, and developing and maintaining safe working procedures.

Growing up in the port of Padstow has given Tom a great interest and understanding of the sea, and has provided the opportunity to be on the water since an early age. His most enjoyable water-based activities are sailing and gig rowing.

Qualifications and training

During his career, Tom has been fortunate enough to attend both Warsash Maritime Academy and South Shields Marine School, two of the most respected maritime academies in the UK. As a result, he has obtained a number of internationally recognised marine qualifications, including a diploma in Nautical Science.

As well as achieving a number of marine specific safety training accreditations, Tom is also IOSH qualified to management level, an internationally recognised accreditation on both land and sea.

Tom is a proud member and graduate of the International Institute for Marine Surveying having completed their internationally recognised diploma in Marine Surveying with accreditation in yachts and small craft up to 24m LOA. As a member of such an esteemed society, Tom must regularly attend training days and seminars as part of his continued professional development. This is an absolute must in such a rapidly changing industry and rightly so a condition of membership.

Tom is also a full member of the Cornwall Marine Network and carries for professional Indemnity and Public Liability insurance.

Location

Zenith Maritime is conveniently located on the North Cornish coast, in the picturesque port of Padstow. Not only is this perfect for ports along the north coast such as Padstow, Rock, Newquay, Bude and Perranporth, it also allows for easy access to all the waterways of Cornwall and Devon including Falmouth, Truro, Plymouth and Exmouth as well as the wider South West.

In addition, flights from Newquay airport are now widely and cheaply available, creating easy transport links with Dublin, Cork, Barcelona and the south of France. We are also available and happy to travel to any other destination that the client requires.

No travelling expenses will be charged for services within Cornwall, and anything further afield will be negotiable between the client and surveyor on a case by case basis.

Why have a marine survey?

First and foremost, the most important reason to have a survey is for vessel and crew safety!

The purchase of a vessel is likely to be one of your greatest expenditures, so a conscientious buyer will wish to know the condition prior to offer and consequent purchase. This could result in the finding of serious issues before it is too late, or give the peace of mind of a sound purchase.

So, should you employ the services of a professional marine surveyor?

ABSOLUTELY!
